How Much Do EV Charging Stations Cost?

Callum CreedBlog

Just enough isn’t enough for you. Going with the flow isn’t for you. You’re the type of person who is always looking to be innovative and at the forefront of new technology. So, no wonder you bought the latest electric vehicle. But now it comes to charging it. Which charging station should you purchase, and how much does an EV charging station cost? Let’s take a look at your options and the costs.

Let’s Get Right to It — The Price Tag on Going Electric

The average commercial-grade charging station will set your wallet back around $6,000, while you can get a basic residential model for around $3,000.

That said, there are more affordable options and high-end choices well north of $10k. The top-of-the-line residential models are priced around $13,000. If you are looking for a high-end commercial model, expect to pay around $50,000.

However, it’s all based on the specific features you need, the brand, and additional technologies integrated into the system during EV charging system installation.

What Are the Driving Factors Behind the Cost?

While the EV equipment is part of the price tag, the most variable cost is the installation process. These aren’t systems you can set up yourself, so forget thinking of it as a Saturday afternoon DIY project.

You need to hire a certified team with experience in EV charging station installation. And this doesn’t mean a standard electrician. The EV experts have specific training in all things charging stations.

The installation complexity varies. Some projects only take a few hours, while intensive systems often take a day or more, especially if upgrades are needed to your initial electrical grid.

Choosing the Right EV Charging Station for You

There are three types of EV charging stations: Levels 1, 2, and 3.

Level 1

These usually cost less than $3k. They plug into a standard electrical outlet, but their charging rate is pretty slow. They are fine if you have one electric vehicle that you use occasionally. But if you own multiple electric vehicles or require use of your vehicle frequently, you might want to consider upgrading.

Level 2

These are the middle ground. They charge quicker than Level 1 models and are more efficient. Expect to pay around $6k for these options. Level 2 models can serve both residential and smaller commercial property needs.

Level 3

These models bring the speed. They can fully charge an electric vehicle in less than an hour. These high-end models serve the needs of commercial charging businesses and other commercial needs where charging stations are frequently used. They are priced at around $50k because they require extensive equipment and a dedicated transformer installed by the utility company.

Determining the Right Level of EV Charger for Your Needs

Now that you know the EV charging station costs, which level is right for you? First, ask yourself how often you will need to use it. Is it solely for personal use, or do you require it for a business venture?

Remember, a Level 2 model is usually sufficient for a standard business. They run on 240v, which is more powerful than the standard household outlet but doesn’t require the extensive infrastructure changes associated with Level 3.

Beyond EV Charging Station Installation

Keep in mind that EV charging stations require ongoing maintenance. So factor in somewhere between $300-500 in annual maintenance costs for Level 1 and Level 2 models. Level 3 models easily top over $1000 in annual maintenance costs.

And, while it might seem intuitive, EV charging stations run on electricity. That means your electric bill is going to go up. While this seems obvious, it’s a long-term cost that many people forget to factor in.
