What is a Printer Meter Reading?

A meter reading is a digital count of the number of pages your printer or copier has produced. Most devices separate this into:

Black & White (also called “monochromatic” or “B&W”) pages
Color Pages
Large format or specialty printers (on some models)

These above-mentioned accounts are the “odometer” of your printer. Your odometer tracks usage over time.

Why are Meter Readings Important?

Accurate Billing

If you’re on a cost-per-copy service agreement, your monthly invoice is based on how many pages your device prints. Accurate meter readings ensure you’re billed correctly–no more, no less.

Supplies & Maintenance Planning

Meter counts help service providers:
• Predict toner usage and deliver supplies just in time (That is where your Copier & Printer dealer often offers a program that automatically ships your supplies to you, eliminating the time & energy spent manually placing Supply Orders)
• Schedule preventative maintenance based on actual usage, not guesses.
Bottom Line of your meter counts for your Service Provider: Submitting meter readings means fewer breakdowns, smoother workflows, and no surprise toner outages.

Equipment Evaluation

Knowing your device’s workload helps you:
• Identify over-utilized OR under-utilized machines.
• Decide when it is time for an upgrade.
• Justify adding additional devices or shifting workloads.
And, you usually do not have to evaluate your equipment yourself. Your service provider can monitor this for you through their DCA app and Print Cost Assessment.

Contract Compliance

For leased printers & copiers, you may be required to provide meter readings at specific intervals to stay compliant with your agreement.

How to Find a Meter Reading (Count) directly on Your Printer

Most modern printers and copiers track meter readings right from the device’s display panel. Here’s a general overview on how to locate them on common brands:

Finding a Kyocera meter reading

Press the “Status/Job Cancel” button on the control panel.
Select “Device Information” or “Counter”, which is usually also found as a button on the control panel’s home screen.
Your total page count and color/B&W breakdown will be displayed.

Finding a Ricoh meter reading

Press the “User Tools/Counter” button.
Select “Counter” or “Meter Reading” from the on-screen options.
View your total prints, broken down by type (copy, print, fax, etc.).

Finding an HP meter reading

For most HP printers:

Press the Home button on the control panel.
Select “Counter check” from the touchscreen menu.
The meter reading (Total Prints, B/W, Color) will be displayed.

For HP Multifunction Printers (MFPs):

Press the “DEVICE” icon on the touch screen, scroll down to and press the “BILLING/USAGE” icon, then press the “MENU” key.
To Print out the Meter Reading report: Select the “REPORTS” icon, then the “DEVICE STATISTICS” icon to print out the report.

Finding a Toshiba Meter Reading

Access the USER FUNCTIONS: Press the [USER FUNCITONS] button on the control panel of your Toshiba printer.
Navigate to TOTAL COUNTER: On the touch screen, look for the [COUNTER] menu and select it. Then press the [TOTAL COUNTER] key to display the print counts.
View Print Counts: On the touch screen, select the [COUNTER]. Then press the [TOTAL COUNTER] key to display the print counts.
To Print out the Meter Reading report: Press the [PRINT OUT TOTAL COUNTER] key to print the totals for your records.

How to Submit Your Meter Reading
